Why Spoons & Hooks?

I have a demanding day job in charge of communications and technology at a non-profit organization, and when I’m at home, two of my favorite ways to unwind are cooking (“Spoons”) and crocheting (“Hooks”). At work, when I’m not behind a camera I’m at a computer writing articles, editing photos and videos, and maintaining the organization’s website. Cooking and crocheting allow me to do things that are both hands-on and meditative.

Out of medical necessity I must avoid gluten and dairy, so I’ve developed a repertoire of GF/DF recipes, as well as ways to adapt regular recipes to remove the gluten and/or dairy but not the tastiness. (Alas, I have not yet found the holy grail, an edible GF/DF pizza, but I’m still looking.)

I learned to crochet when I was 11, (cough) decades ago, and I particularly enjoy deconstructing patterns to come up with something new and different – and usually, less complicated than the original.

Because I’m very busy at my job, I like to keep my hobbies uncomplicated. The recipes and patterns I post here will be straightforward and accessible. I might even throw in a time-saving hack or two.

If you have any questions or feedback about anything I post, I’d love to hear from you in the comments, or you can email me at spoonsandhooks@gmail.com.
